Veg Burger review

I have been in the search for a good Veg Burger in Bangalore for a while. And no, I do not mean the factory made McDonalds burger. Yuck. Have gotten bored of eating the “exact formula based burger”. Last week, happened to have a pretty good burger at the food court in the Forum, Koramangala. In the Shiv Sagar booth, there was a burger on display. And it said 50 bucks. So I said, what the heck.

Review:

It was pretty good actually. Deep fried patty in between the buns. But not dripping with oil. Long oval buns. Not the usual small burger buns. Sesame topping was there. The burger was cut in two, so it made eating easy. Fresh slices of tomato, cucumber, onion, green peppers, and guess what, beetroot, on top of the patty. Some sauce in between – most probably mayo.

The burger was indeed juicy (just the right amount). Not oily, and made a perfect eat.

If any other Bangaloreans have any perfect veg burger joints, let me know in the comments !

No entry tax – Karnataka – Sensible judgement.

Wah. I was waiting for this stupidity to end. Thank God for a sensible judge who overruled it. Karnataka forces people to pay entry tax (and it is as steep as 12% for cars/scooters/…) whenever you buy a vehicle outside the state and bring it in. It was the main reason, why I sold my WagonR in Noida, came to Bangalore, and then bought my new car. Add to the woes, the road tax in KA is probably the highest in the country too.

…road tax in the state is supposed to be the country’s highest. Road tax on cars below Rs 5 lakh is roughly around 10.8%, and from above Rs 5 lakh it varies between 13.75% and 17.5%. The tax in New Delhi is 4% and in Kerala it’s 6%. —source

Phew, and now a sensible judge has overruled this. I particularly like the wordings that were used. Beautiful.

Justice Kumar observed that the makers of the Constitution had favoured free movement and exchange of goods throughout India, which is necessary for the economy and for improving living standards of the country. In his 200-page judgment, he noted that Article 301 emphasises that the economic unity of the country would provide the main sustaining force for stability and progress of the political and cultural unity of the country. Justice Kumar pointed out that in the present context of globalisation, privatisation and free economy, the national boundaries and barriers should be sidelined for the benefit of economic development of the world, “If a state’s economy should be prosperous, because of the tax holidays and lower tax rates, it only shows a mature political leadership vibrant tax planning and marshalling resources available in the state. It is worthy of emulation by other states by free flow of trade and commerce from such a state to neighbouring states.”

Sky on Fire

skyonfireThe sky was on fire today evening. Taken on my way back from work. It was around 6:30PM. Location: Marathahalli bridge. Camera: Nokia 7210 mobile camera (2MP). No post processing done except for the border.

Update: When I typed “No post processing in the previous paragraph”, my mind wandered, and I wondered – “What if …”. I did only one post processing step. “Auto-level” in paint.net. Was I surprised with the result ? Wow. See for yourself.

skyonfire_autolevelIt does look very professional doesnt it ? Especially the greys on the clouds.

Thali Gharwali

On Saturday, I had lunch at Purabhi’s Dal Roti – one of our favourite restaurants in Koramangala (R loves it there too). I had originally thought I would have their delicious parathas – two parathas served and they are huge (defenitely worth the money – and they are reasonable too!). Then I chanced to see the Thali Gharwali. For some reason, R and I have always skipped this.

Today, I was in the mood for a square meal, or a um, round meal, sure whatever. And the thali it was. I know the manager of this restaurant well (yeah yeah, I know, it is because we have frequented this place too often in the past!). So he came and kushalam vijaarichified (*). I asked what was there in the thali today. And he said, good stuff and made the A-OK sign with his fingers. I said “Bring it on!”.

The perfect meal:

  • – 3 phulkas
  • – 1 katori dal makhani (the dal makhani here is the best I have tasted in Bangalore)
  • – 1 katori jeera aaloo
  • – 1 katori kadi pakodi (I am not a fan of kadi – so I fished out the pakodi and ate it ! :-))
  • – 1 katori pulao (only half cooked – typical of north Indian food !)
  • – 1 katori mixed raita (delicious tomatos and cucumbers, and very less onions)
  • – 1 lijjat papad

On the whole, quantity which is just about right, and variety a plenty. I did not feel gluttonous after the meal. Perfecto. Kudos to the Dal Roti Chef.

Location of restaurant: Koramangala – on the road which leads to Sony world junction from Vivek Nagar/National Games Village. It is between the pizza hut junction and Sony world. It is on the first floor. The entrance is on a side road. It is easy to miss. Look out for their signboard (see below):

Garam Naram Dhaba – Ulsoor Bangalore

Have heard a lot about the Dhaba next to the Gurudwara in Ulsoor. So went there today. The name said ‘Garam Naram Dhaba’. I have heard about it only as Bobby-da-dhaba. (Not sure if  they changed the name !). My review about the dhaba below:

  • Decent Parathas – with the customary dollop of butter on top
  • Rajma Chawal was so-so.
  • Chilly Panner Veg was also so-so.
  • Lassi was very diluted (compared to the lassi you get in North India)
  • Ambience – it is inside a room – so not so dhaba-like. Furniture is very dhaba-like. Moulded tables and chairs.
  • Service – relatively fast – but the starter and the food arrived at the same time.

Foggy Bangalore

The remote connectivity to my workplace was broken – due to some data center failure in the US. So I had to go to work in the morning – I wanted to go early and be back early. So I left home at 6:40AM. And wow, it was a ride to remember, to ITPL.
